If you've ever wanted to try curling - for a low cost with no committment required - you have found the right place!
Join us for a two hour lesson on the A-Z basics of curling. We have specifically designed a program to give you the basic skills that you need to continue with more advanced lessons, join a beginner league, or come out for a recreational event. We have also put these lessons at the very beginning of our curling season. So if you decide that you love it, you'll have lots of opportunities to get involved!
Our lead instructor Sarah has taught more of these programs than she could ever begin to count and has worked hard to create a program that is both fun and informative.
About the Lesson
Each lesson will be two hours and will run regardless of the number of participants. As long as one person registers, we will be there to teach! However, we would encourage you, if you are considering registering, talk to friends, family, co-workers, or anyone else about joining you. Curling is a social sport and it is very likely that your experience will be enhanced with friends around.
When are the Lessons?
We will host two Try Curling lessons in October.
October 2, 2023 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm
October 3, 2023 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm
If these dates don't work for you, please don't give up on us! We will be hosting monthly Adult Curling 101 Programs throughout the season. It is also an option to contact the club and arrange a Private or Group Lesson at your convenience.
How Much?
Each lesson is $20.00 + GST for each participant. Your $20 gets you a two hour lesson with qualified instructors and all necessary curling equipment.
What do I Need to Bring?
The Avonair will provide all curling equipment required for the lesson. All participants are responsible for bringing clean, indoor running shoes and appropriate clothing. The best clothing is long, stretchy pants of some kind (tights, sweatpants, track pants etc) and layers on top. While the temperature in the rink is not arctic, it is an ice rink and can get cold. It's far better to have the layers and not need them, than the other way around.
Gloves and hats are permitted, but please ensure that any gloves do not have fuzz or sparkles that will fall onto the ice during the lesson.
Helmets are not mandatory for participants over the age of 12, but are always encouraged at each participant's discretion.
If you do have your own curling equipment, please feel free to bring it along! We will teach you how to use it safely.
Please note: Clean shoes are mandatory. It is extremely important that shoes worn outside in the snow, water, and gravel not come on to our curling ice. If a participant comes to a lesson with inappropriate shoes, it is likely that they will be unable to participate on the ice.
Who Can Join?
Anyone! Anyone and everyone!
Although most of our programs throughout the season are designed for participants 18 years and older, Try Curling Lessons are open to anyone. If you do want to bring your children out for a fun curling experience, please ensure that there is a 1-1 adult to child ratio. Also, anyone under the age of 12 is required to wear a helmet.
Curling has also made many improvements in the last couple of decades to broaden the accessibility of the sport. If crouching down and sliding seems impossible, stick curling is an option. This keeps the participant upright at all times. The Avonair Curling Club is also the home club to the Edmonton Rocks Wheelchair League.
