Calling all Surling Curlers!
The best of two worlds - Traditional Curling and Stick Curling
About the Event
If you aren't sure what sturling is, you're not alone! Read on for more information.
Sturling Curling is a hybrid version of Traditional Curling and Stick Curling. Instead of regular Stick Curling, which requires all participants to throw with a stick, Sturling allows players to slide and deliver a stone in the traditional manner if they choose to, while still playing a game with Stick Curling rules.
A Sturling team is made up of two people. One person stands at each end of the ice and stays there throughout the entire game. Each player takes turns throwing six rocks in a row - alternating with the opposing team. There is no sweeping between the hog lines, so shot precision is required. The player's partner may sweep from the hogline into the house if they wish.
If you have never curled with a stick before and would like to give it a try, this would be an excellent event to do so. Otherwise, if you prefer to slide to deliver your stones or throw with a stick at all times, we welcome that as well! All we would ask is that once you have chosen a method for a game, please stick with it for the remainder of the game. We welcome you to switch delivery methods between games if you so choose!
When is the Bonspiel?
The Avonair will host one Sturling Dayspiel in the 2022/23 Season. The event will take place on December 3, 2022 starting at 9:00 am. The event is one day only and will conclude at approximately 5:00 pm.

The cost for the Sturling Dayspiel is $75.00/Person. Payment is required in advance of the start of the event. For your money, you will get the following:
- Three 6 end games of Sturling
- A $20.00/win payout for each game
- Breakfast, lunch, and snacks throughout the day
- A $100 draw to the button competition
A approximate breakdown of your $75.00 fee is shown below:
- $15.00 for ice preparation and staff
- $40.00 for meals and snacks
- $20.00 for prizes and payouts
Please note: If you have specific dietary restrictions, we will need to know at least a week in advance of the event.
What do I Need to Bring?
Yourself and a partner!
If you have curling equipment, please bring that along. If you do not, don't worry! All players without official curling gear are responsible for bringing clean, indoor shoes and appropriate clothing. The Avonair will provide grippers, sliders, stabilizers, and brooms to anyone who requires them. Helmets are not required, but participants are encouraged to consider helmet use.
Please note: Clean shoes are mandatory. It is extremely important that shoes worn outside in the snow, water, and gravel not come on to our curling ice. If a participant comes to the event with inappropriate shoes, it is likely that they will be unable to participate on the ice.
Who Can Join?
Anyone and everyone!
Although most of our programs and events throughout the season are designed for participants 18 years and older, if families wish to participate in the event with their children, this would be an excellent event! All we would ask is that there is a 1 adult to 1 child ratio on the ice at all times. Also, anyone under the age of 12 is required to wear a helmet.
Where are we Located?
10607 Princess Elizabeth Avenue NW, Edmonton - in the Kingsway Mall Parking Lot
Conveniently we are directly across from the NAIT LRT Station if you choose to take public transit. If you do drive, we have plenty of parking outside our facility.
We hope that we have convinced you to come out and give bonspieling a chance. See you on the ice!
